SNOW HILL – John A. Holmes High School will send a singles player and a doubles team to the State 2A tournament this weekend.
Ellie Spear won the singles championship, while Sydney Spear and Haley Rinehart took third place in doubles at the Class 2A East regional tournament at the Greene County Tennis Complex on Saturday 23 October.
No. 2 seed Ellie Spear in singles started with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over North Johnston’s Sandy Johnson in the first round, then stopped East Duplin’s Nora Brown 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals to win the state tournament place.
Spear then defeated Kaylee Hill of Greene Central 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals to claim the title with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over No.1 seed Anna Katherine Medlin of Greene Central.
In doubles, aces duo Sydney Spear and Rinehart opened the tournament as the No. 3 seed in their category.
The Holmes duo faced East Duplin’s Jamesan Blizzard and Asia Southerland 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, then knocked out Raegan Majors and Harbor Early of East Carteret 6-0, 6-1 in the quarter-finals.
Spears / Rinehart fell to No.1 seed McKinsey Harper and Kristen Colie of Greene Central, 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals, but came back to third place with a 4-6 victory , 6-1, 6-1 on the Greene Central squad consisting of Venancia Miller and Sidney Ramsey.
The State Class 2A Individual Tournament will be held October 29-30 at Ting Park in Holly Springs.
In singles, Ellie Spear will face Evelyn Atkins of Seaforth in the first round.
Next, Holmes’ doubles team of Sydney Spear and Rinehart will face Sarayu Brundavanam / Krisha Avula of Raleigh Charter.
