MILWAUKEE (AP) – Brittany Bowe won the women’s 1,500-meter and Joey Mantia won the men’s event in record time at the US speed skating trials on Saturday, placing the veterans on their third Olympic team.

Bowe finished in 1 minute 50.32 seconds to win his third individual event for Beijing at the Pettit National Ice Center, where fans have been banned due to increasing cases of COVID-19.

Mantia won in 1: 44.01, lowering Chad Hedrick’s track record to 1: 44.47. Emery Lehman was second in 1: 45.10 to advance to his third Olympics.

Mantia was second in the 1000m.

Bowe’s excitement was dampened by Erin Jackson’s failure to make the 500 team a day earlier. Jackson slipped during his 500m race and finished third, behind winner Bowe and Kimi Goetz.

“Erin is a great friend of mine, great teammate,” Bowe said. “I would be lying if I said it didn’t affect me emotionally a bit.”

It also affected Goetz, who finished third in the 1,500m. She finished second behind Bowe in the 1000m and earned her first Olympic spot.

“Yesterday was a little stressful and emotional, and I let that continue today,” Goetz said. “No apologies. I’m disappointed that I didn’t finish in the top two.

Mia Manganello Kilburg was second in the 1,500 in 1: 54.85 and will make her second Olympic appearance next month. She has already won the 3000m, but the United States is yet to have a guaranteed place in this event.

Jackson returned a day after his slip and was sixth in the 1,500 in 2: 02.45. Her specialty is the 500, where in November she became the first black woman to win a World Cup event. She dominated the event on the World Cup circuit.

Now she would need Bowe or Goetz to turn down their spot in the 500m to compete in her second Olympics.

“My heart is breaking for her,” Bowe said. “I hope internally we can find a way to bring him to the Olympics.”

Jackson was not available to speak remotely with the media, which was prohibited during the trials.

The five-day practice ends Sunday with the mass start of the men and women. Skaters for the team pursuit events in Beijing will be chosen by the US coaches.
