Litchfield advanced to the semifinals of the State Class A tennis tournament with a 4-3 victory over Pine City on Tuesday at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
The Dragons face Providence Academy in the semi-finals at 10 a.m. today. The state championship game is set for 4 p.m. today, with a third-place game played at 2 p.m.
Providence Academy advanced with a 5-2 victory over Crookston. Meanwhile, in the other bracket, Fairmont beat Morris Area / Chokio-Alberta 7-0, and Breck outscored Rochester Lourdes 5-2.
The state quarterfinal was a hotly contested affair, with five of seven matches in straight sets.
Litchfield reached the semi-finals thanks to his depth. Although they lost their first two singles and the best doubles match, the Dragons won matches in the third and fourth singles, and the # 2 and # 3 doubles.
Sophomore Karlee Prahl topped Brooke Boland of Pine City 6-3, 6-3 for third in singles. Seventh-year student Isla Dille picked up the Dragons’ second point in singles with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win over Lena Roubinek.
Taylor Draeger and Olivia Olson scored a run for second in singles with a 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 win. And Kaitlyn Palmer and Sophie Stilwell ensured the advancement of the Dragons State Tournament with a 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 victory in the No. 3 doubles.
